BEYOND DUALITIES: POWER AND LOVE FOR WOMEN AND MEN: Miki Kashtan, Co-founder, BayNVC

Despite impressive gains won through decades of feminist activism, many women are still either serving in traditional supportive roles or asked to forego care and love and adapt to a harsh, competitive, and impersonal work-world. Nonviolent Communication (NVC) offers the premise that women and men share the same human needs and can therefore connect and work together effectively. Through empathic connection, empowered speech, and a commitment to everyone's needs, NVC advocates believe the practice can support all people in living a fully human life. Kashtan is co-founder of BayNVC, an organization staffed almost entirely by women. Her teaching style is interactive and builds on the real-life experiences of her audience.
Cost: $8 members, $20 non-members, $7 students (with valid ID)

REMEMBERING AFGHAN WOMEN
Katherine Brown, Truman National Security Project Fellow; Former Communications and Public Events Advisor, U.S. Embassy Kabul; NGO Worker; Former White House Staffer

Following the overthrow of the misogynistic Taliban regime in Afghanistan, the situation for women seemed to enter a promising era. A Ministry of Women was established, and a new constitution guaranteed women 25 percent representation in the legislature. But progress has been stymied in Afghanistan. More than 80 percent of Afghan women are illiterate and many remain victims of violence. Brown will address the key challenges that hamper progress in Afghanistan and discuss how women are working to create possible solutions.
